The types of waste (3): movement

Of course, movement in itself is not wasteful, but if work processes are interrupted or delayed, this also counts as a type of waste. How often do you experience in offices that you have to walk a long way to get to the colleagues who are still working on the same project. There are now companies in which meetings are only scheduled 10 minutes past the hour, because otherwise colleagues with consecutive meetings have no chance of being on time. The reason for this type of waste is that future processes are not taken into account during construction planning. A particularly striking example can be found in the hospital in Aachen: There, the helipad was several hundred meters away from patient admission, a distance that can only be covered on foot and took about 8 minutes. In an emergency, this is a period that can be life-changing. In the meantime, improvements have been made in Aachen and a helicopter ramp has been built to shorten this travel time. The costs were in the 2-digit million range.
